History of the Microtechnology Laboratory (MTL)

MTL is the foundation of the MEMs program at the University of Minnesota. MTL is housed in the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science building which was completed in 1988. This building also houses several other EE related laboratories and classroms.

MTL was originally founded in the early 1980's as a microelectronics laboratory for research and education in integrated circuits, but today supports research in microelectro- mechanical systems (MEMS), silicon integrated circuits, III-V compound semiconductor structures and devices, nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, bioanalytical microsystems, surgical microinstruments, thin films, particle technology, superconductive devices, semiconductor physics and information storage technologies. A diagram of MTL shows the general layout of the lab and its equipment.
