My research involves the deposition, characterization, and application of
multilayer thin film materials for magnetic information storage
technologies. My research programs are focused on correlating the
micromagnetic and physical microstructures of magnetic thin films with
macromagnetic properties and magnetic recording processes at ultra-high
areal densities, measurement and modeling of coherent and incoherent
magnetization reversal and hysteresis, intrinsic magnetic noise, magenetic
exchange interactions, development of nano-characterization techniques,
and optimization of thin films for magnetic recording media and heads,
magnetic sensors, and magnetic thin film memories.
The Center for
Micromagnetics and Information Technologies (MINT) possess high vacuum
equipment for the deposition of polycrystalline and amorphous magnetic and
wear and corrosion resistant thin films by various sputtering techniques.
The MINT has characterization equipment including vibrating sample and
torque magnetometers, transmission and scanning electron, optical,
magneto-optical, atomic force, and magnetic force microscopes, and
computer-controlled recording spinner and stiction/friction testers.
For more information, please read the research
page on the MINT web.
