Goldy Gopher Registration Information and Forms

Registration Deadline to Avoid $50 Late Fee: You must register by before the first day of class to avoid late registration fees. If your initial registration for each session occurs after classes begin you will be assessed a $50 late registration fee.

IT Technology Fee: $170/semester for students registering for 6 or more credits.

Graduate students who have completed 24 semester credits in graduate school at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, exclusive of thesis credits, will be exempt unless they take a course that requires use of the IT labs (see below).

IT courses that require the IT technology fee: Fall 2007.
If you are responsible for paying another college technology fee and take an IT course requiring use of the IT public computing labs, you will not be assessed the IT technology fee.

Other students who wish to open an IT Labs Account, will be billed a $170 fee for each term they open the account. The fee will be assessed to their STARS account. For computer fee questions or problems, call the IT Student Affairs Office at (612) 624-8504.

Grading System
The Graduate School uses two grading systems: A-B-C-D-F (with pluses and minuses) and S-N. Students have the option of choosing the system under which they will be graded, except in courses in which grading has been restricted to one system with approval of the Graduate School. Students choose their grading system at the time of initial registration. 5xxx and 8xxx courses with grades of A, B, C (including C-), and S may be applied to a Graduate School degree program; changes in grading option are not allowed after the second week of the term. Under some circumstances and with approval of the student's major field, 4xxx (see the department's approved list of 4000-level courses acceptable for graduate credit) courses may also be applied to a Graduate School degree. All A-F registrations in the Graduate School, regardless of course level, will be calculated in the cumulative GPA. The department requires that all classes offered A-F or S-N must be taken for grade A-F and not S-N to be counted toward Electrical Engineering graduate degree requirements.

Calculating GPA

Every letter grade a student receives is worth a specified number of grade points depending on the number of credits the class was taken for.  The GPA is the sum of the grade points earned divided by the total number of credits taken.  To come up with the number of points, you must first convert the letter grade into numbers.  The following chart displays the conversion of letter grades into numbers that can be used to figure out GPA.

Incomplete Grades—The symbol “I” may be assigned by an instructor to indicate “incomplete,” in accordance with provisions announced in class at the beginning of the semester, when in the instructor's opinion there is a reasonable expectation that the student can successfully complete the work of the course. An “I” remains on the transcript until the instructor replaces it with a final A-F or S-N grade. Course instructors may, at their discretion, establish a time limit for the removal of incomplete grades. The maximum number of credits of incompletes allowable at any given time is established by each major field for its graduate students. Students should refer to the Graduate School's Web site at
www.grad.umn.edu for further information.

Retaking Courses—The Graduate School discourages the retaking of courses to improve grades. If a course is retaken, appropriate tuition and fees will be assessed. All registrations and grades for the course remain on the student's transcript and are calculated into the cumulative GPA.

Grade Changes—To preserve the integrity of the graduate transcript as an accurate record of a student's academic progress, the Graduate School does not approve requests to change final grades assigned to students in prior semesters.

Grad 999 registration - a zero-credit, zero-fee, non-graded registration option (late registration fees will be assessed)- is an option for Graduate School students who must register solely to meet the Graduate School's registration requirement. This registration should not be used if you are not currently working toward degree requirements. The department monitors Grad 999 registrations. If you are a full-time student registering for Grad 999, a registration hold will be placed on your account for the next semester's registration. In order to remove the registration hold, please contact Linda Jagerson at jager001@umn.edu or by phone at 612.625.3564 to discuss your degree progress.

Registration - Course Time Conflict Approval Form- If you want to register for classes that overlap in the time they meet.

Registration - Exception Request Form- Used to request to change registration after the registration has closed. Please read the 'Information for Filing the Registration Exception Request Form' before fililng this form.

Registration - Fee Waiver Appeal Form-Used to appeal late registration fee charges, additional fees charged to your University student account after the due date, or your installment plan payment is less than the minimum amount due.

MS Advanced Masters Status- Full-Time Status with One Credit Regsitration. You must have completed all coursework on your degree program, including registering for all thesis credits if MSEE Plan A, and all grades must be posted to be eligible to register for Advanced Masters Status.

PhD Advanced Doctoral Status Form- Full-Time Status with One Credit Regsitration. You must have passed the PhD Preliminary Oral Exam, completed all coursework on your degree program and all grades must be posted, and registered for all thesis credits to be eligible to register for Advanced Doctoral Status..

Assistantship - Request to register for less than 6 credits Form- Graduate Assistants are required to register for six credits. If you need to register for less than six credits, complete this form before the registration period ends.

Registration Requirement for the Master's Degree—Master's degree students are required by the Graduate School to complete at least 60 percent of the coursework for their official degree programs (excluding thesis credits) as registered University of Minnesota Graduate School students; individual major fields may require a higher percentage. With approval of the adviser, director of graduate studies in the major (and director of graduate studies in the minor, if the courses are for a designated minor), and Graduate School, transfer coursework may make up the remaining 40 percent (maximum) of the degree coursework (see Transfer of Credits for the Master's Degree below).

Master's Plan A students must enroll for a minimum of 10 thesis credits (8777) before receiving the degree.

Double Counting—Students may have a maximum of 8 credits in common between two master's-level degrees.

Transfer of Credits for the Master's Degree—Unless otherwise specified under a studentʼs major in Degree Programs and Faculty, the following rules apply to transfer of credits.
Master's degree students are required by the Graduate School to complete at least 60 percent of the coursework for their official degree programs (excluding thesis credits) as registered University of Minnesota Graduate School students. With approval of the adviser, director of graduate studies in the major (and director of graduate studies in the minor, if the courses are for a designated minor), and Graduate School, the transfer of up to 40 percent of the degree program coursework from any combination of the following is permitted.
